The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy has this as [We have met the enemy, and they are us] -- pretty funny, since I don't think of them as a bastion of political correctness.

The original "We have met the enemy, and they are ours" was from a post-battle report by [Oliver Hazard Perry] during the War of 1812.
